The Ex-ULAA’s National President was recently convicted for engaging in sexual abuse to his underaged sister-in-law for a period of time without being exposed. Nonetheless, the reality of the adage: “Nothing remains hidden under the sun”. In this case, it finally caught-up with him. Actually, it is a visit from Karma! Such a warning serves as a guide to live life honestly. Yet, many individuals take it for granted. Instead of learning from their mistakes and that of others, they behave like fools who take pride in repeating their UGLY behaviors.

Ex-ULAA President, Wilmot W. Kunney

In fact, Karma doesn’t need addresses of wrongdoers to pay them visits! In Kunney’s case, it is highly satisfying when Karma strikes him. Karma (or Kamma) in Buddhism means “action”. In popular discourse, it is often linked to fate or predestination. Karma, however, refers to actions that are undertaken consciously. Stated simply, the Law of Karma decrees that every deed one performs knowingly will eventually produce the expected or unexpected outcome(s).

On the other hand, Hinduism identifies it as “the relationship between a person’s mental or physical action and the consequences following that action. It also signifies the consequences of all the actions of a person in their current and previous lives and the chain of cause and effect in morality.”

Now the question we should be asking answer is, what effect the conviction of ULAA’s Ex-National President will have on the organization’s reputation? As an organization whose history has been somewhat stained by some of its former leaders, specifically, Charles M. Taylor and his supporters; one may agree that the damage they intend to do to the good name of ULAA, affected them, not the organization. This is a warning to those who intend to spoil the good name of our august organization, should look-out for a visit from Karma. Since the embryo our great organization, we swore to uphold the Covenant with the Liberian people at home to advocate on their behalf; no matter the consequence – because it is a JUST CAUSE worth advocating for!

Sad Time in the Liberian Community in the Diaspora

The sexual abuse crime committed by our Ex-National President Wilmot W. Kunney, has the propensity to smear the good name of our great organization. While in the past some former ULAA leaders have done substantial damage to the good name of our beloved organization; I am confident to say that ULAA remains relevant to Liberians at home and in the Diaspora because of our continued history of advocacy on behalf of our people at home over these 49 years.

Therefore, the Idiom, “One Bad Apple Spoils the Bunch” cannot apply to us. Since it a reality of life that as long as human beings walk this earth, they will encounter good times as well as bad times. For example, ULAA had been faced with many challenges in the past. The crime committed by our Ex-President Kunney is a kinja he along will tote. Due to his despicable behavior, ULAA members and leaders cannot be described as “birds of the same feathers”. As a matter of fact, we will reach out to the family he has victimized.

Violence against women by any one is wrong, whether the abuser is a family member; an acquaintance, or a stranger. The victim is not at fault. The victim did not cause the abuse to occur; she is not responsible for the violent behavior of someone else. In the case that involved Kunney, the victim did the right to have reported the sexual assault to the family. I believe it took her this long because of threats she must have received or she found it uncomfortable reporting it. Sexual abuse by a family member, otherwise known as incest, can have lasting effects on a minor’s development and sense of safety. Again, the leadership of ULAA will reach out to the victim to convey the organization’s concern and if needed, we will provide community connections and support that can help survivors of incest manage the effects and begin healing.ULAA

Since ULAA is our organization, we cannot afford to throw the bath water that contained the baby – meaning ULAA. Therefore, those of us who founded ULAA, and are current members will continue to work to fix problems we are faced with. A wise person learns from the mistakes of others, while a fool learns from his own foolish mistakes. We are not fools!

This reminds me of the profound statement by Quincy Jones, the American record and television producer: “People will do anything they can to tarnish your name, reputation, and success…but they can never touch your soul…True character always wins in the end if you stay true to who you are.”

Conclusion

Finally, let me make it crystal clear! As leaders, when we continue to compromise, ignore, disregard, manipulate or short change the fundamental rules, and the law of decency, it creates a wedge between civility and humility. This appears to be the tendency among the New ULAA members! Certainly, these New ULAA members are controlled by external forces that are deeply rooted in the matrix of illusions that is guided by incompetence. They do not see the essence of things outside of what they are learning from our corrupt leaders in Liberia.

Our so-called leaders at home only care for their families, friends, and associates at the expense of the masses. Our POOR people at home go to bed day in and day out without a decent meal. Yet, the biggest ambition of some of our leaders in the Diaspora is to serve as their cheerleaders. It is not cleared whether their motivation to align with these exploiters is driven by fear or mere indignation and greed.

Fellow compatriots, there are enormous tasks ahead of us! That is the reason we cannot remain aloof to see the lives and the future of our people sliding towards an abyss of violence at home. The saddest reality that continues to dawn on some of us is that we can hardly find enough people on our side to fulfill God’s will to advocate for the fair distribution of the wealth of our country for the ultimate benefits for the Liberian people.

Karma’s visits to these lawless hoodlums are justified; because the Law of Karma decrees that every deed a person wrongly performed, that person will eventually bear the consequence(s). It cannot be “birds of the same feathers”! Instead, it will be the kinja one commits will be carried along.

Let’s not forget that nothing remains hidden forever!
