PUBLIC STATEMENT BY YDUNA ON THE RECENT MURDERS OF INNOCENT INDIGENES OF OKE-ODAN BY SOME OFFICERS OF NIGERIAN CUSTOMS SERVICE

Members of the Yewa Descendants Union of North America (YDUNA) have, due to urgent calls and messages from friends and family, become aware of the incident that happened at Oke-Odan on May 1, 2016, which resulted in the death of 2 innocent citizens, and the reported serious injuries to 6 others.
According to the information available to us, the unfortunate incidence arose as a result of the indiscriminate discharge of military-grade weapons by some elements of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). These Customs officers, claiming to be in pursuit of some fleeing smugglers, indiscriminately fired live bullets into a town populated by innocent Yewa indigenes going about their benign daily activities without any involvement with the Customs Officers’ assigned duties.
The National President, National Executive Council and indeed all members of YDUNA wish to strongly condemn this wanton and unlawful act of savagery, carelessness and lawlessness. The Union also calls on the leadership of the NCS led by the Comptroller-General Rtd. Colonel Hameed Ali to do the needful, and set up a panel of enquiry to ferret out these rogue officers, bring them to justice and provide the necessary compensation to the families that have lost breadwinners, the traumatized people and the injured.
As concerned citizens of Ogun State, we hereby call on the State Government to look into all these incessant incidents in Yewaland where security agents have been known to act indiscretionally and with poor judgment, and find ways to curtail their excesses. Moreso, when lives of innocent citizens have been dangerously exposed to such attacks.

We wish to hereby offer our condolences and commiserations to Oloke-Odan of Oke-Odan, HRH Oba (Dr) Oluwarotimi Fagbenro, and indeed all Yewa people on the death of these innocent citizens. We sincerely hope that all stakeholders will put their heads together so that this sort of an event does not happen again.

Thank you,

Adesoji Adewale-National President
Kehinde Kolawole-General Secretary
Sola Olaniyan-National Publicity Officer
