TRIBUTE TO A WONDERFUL LIBERIAN EDUCATOR: THE LATE MADAME MARY BROWNELL By Edmud Zar-Zar Bargblor
Madame Mary Brownell, one of Liberia’s outstanding and outspoken civil society advocates has died at the age of 88. She was former University of Liberia Alumni Association President and mother of Dr. H. Boimah Fahnbulleh Jr. (One of Liberia’s intellectual minds), and Liberia’s legendary female singer Madame Miatta Fahnbulleh.
Mrs. Mary Brownell was principal of Bong Town High School in 1979, my first year out of Cuttington University, in the area of Education Mathematics. She was patient, kind and professional. She was the first administrator who ever recognized that I had talents and something special to share with the world; especially at a time in Liberia when young men from the interior were looked down upon and viewed as ‘country boys’. She was never a part of the ‘Liberian-Country-Congo Divide’. She valued all Liberians, irrespective of their tribes or sections.
She appointed me as Head of the Mathematics Department, Bong Town High School, in 1979 and requested that I upgrade the standard of Mathematics. As the result, graduates of Bong Town High School were superior in the areas of Mathematics and the Sciences. Seniors were introduced to PreCalculus before graduation from Bong Town. Since I was also into music, she appointed me, as director of the School Glee Club.
When I resigned from my position in February, 1981, she and the late Mr. George Clinton, Superintendent of Schools of the Bong Education Center, were sad to see me leave. But were nevertheless happy to see me enrolled to pursue my graduate studies at Howard University, Washington, D.C. Mrs. Brownell had a strong presence and a heart that embraced her staff, students and the Bong Town Community as a whole. She was a great educator in every sense of the word.
Mrs. Mary Brownell You’re Still My Inspiration

You've been my inspiration
From the time when I was a young college graduate
And many times throughout the years
Your praises I have sung
You are the greatest Administrator
That I have ever known
The lessons that you taught me
Have flourished and have grown
You're still my inspiration
So I'm sending this to you, wherever you are
With all my love and gratitude
For your professionalism and guidance
Farewell Great Liberian Educator, Sleep and Take Your Rest ,
Till we Meet Again.
May your Soul Rest In Perfect Peace
