A Statement of Appreciation to the Esteemed Leadership, The Gallant Armed Forces, and The Resilient People of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (A Perspective)
May I, on behalf of the people of the Republic of Liberia, express our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the monumental sacrifices made during the darkest hours of Liberia’s civil wars.
When the drums of war and internal strife devastated our nation, threatening the very survival of our people, Nigeria answered the call of brotherhood. Through the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), Nigeria played a leading role in the regional effort to halt the violence, restore order, and create the conditions for peace.
Nigeria carried a disproportionate share of the military, financial, and logistical burden of that intervention. Nigerian troops constituted the backbone of the ECOMOG force, while Nigeria’s resources and leadership sustained the regional peace effort through some of Liberia’s most difficult years. Historical accounts document the extraordinary scale of Nigeria’s commitment to Liberia.
Recognition of Nigeria’s Contributions
• The Ultimate Sacrifice: Hundreds of brave Nigerian soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice on Liberian soil. Their lives were given in the service of peace and in defense of a people whose nation had been torn apart by war. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.
• Financial and Material Commitment: Nigeria committed enormous financial and material resources to the Liberian peace effort. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo stated in 1999 that Nigeria had spent at least US$8 billion during its seven-year ECOMOG operation in Liberia and that at least 500 Nigerian soldiers had been killed, with many others wounded or missing.
• Humanitarian and Refugee Support: Nigeria also opened its doors to Liberians displaced by war, providing refuge and assistance to people who had been forced from their homes.
• Leadership in Regional Diplomacy: Nigeria’s leadership within ECOWAS was instrumental in pursuing cease-fires, negotiations, transitional arrangements, and other diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Liberia’s prolonged conflict.
Nigeria’s Enduring Role in Liberia’s Peace
Nigeria’s commitment to Liberia did not end with the ECOMOG intervention.
In 2003, as the Liberian conflict moved toward its final resolution, the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) succeeded the ECOWAS peacekeeping presence. Nigerian personnel became a major component of that United Nations mission. The United Nations has described Nigerian troops as the military backbone of UNMIL, which served in Liberia from 2003 until 2018.
Nigeria remained deeply engaged in Liberia’s transition from war to peace, contributing military personnel, leadership, and expertise to the protection of civilians, the consolidation of security, and the strengthening of Liberia’s institutions. UNMIL ultimately helped disarm more than 100,000 former combatants, supported democratic elections, and assisted Liberia in assuming full responsibility for its own security.
Nigeria’s contribution was therefore not simply a military intervention. It was a sustained commitment to the restoration of peace, stability, and democratic governance in Liberia.
A Brotherhood That History Must Remember
Nigeria’s role in Liberia represents one of the profound examples of African solidarity in modern West African history.
At a time when Liberia was engulfed in violence and the international community had not yet fully mobilized to meet the magnitude of the crisis, Nigeria stood with Liberia. Nigerian men and women in uniform entered a dangerous conflict zone, endured tremendous hardship, and, tragically, many never returned home.
We therefore recognize that Nigeria paid a heavy price—in lives, resources, and national sacrifice—to help Liberia find its way back from war.
Your commitment was not merely transactional. It was an expression of Pan-African solidarity and of the conviction that the security and prosperity of one West African nation are inseparable from the security and prosperity of its neighbors.
Because of the courage and sacrifice of those who served, Liberian children have the opportunity to attend school, farmers can cultivate their fields, families can build their lives, and our nation can pursue its democratic future without the shadow of civil war hanging over every generation.
The peace Liberia enjoys today was achieved through the contributions and sacrifices of many—Liberians and international partners alike. But Nigeria occupies a special place in that history.
For this, the people of Liberia owe the people of Nigeria a debt of gratitude that words can scarcely repay. We remember your fallen heroes. We honor those who served.
We recognize the sacrifices made by Nigerian families who sent their sons and daughters to Liberia. And we affirm that the bonds of friendship between Liberia and Nigeria must never be forgotten.
To the Giant of Africa, on the 66th Anniversary of your Independence Day we say:
Thank you, Nigeria.
Thank you for standing with Liberia when we needed a brother.
Thank you for the sacrifices made in the cause of peace.
Thank you for believing that Liberia’s future was worth fighting for.
May the memory of those who gave their lives for peace remain eternal.
May the friendship between Liberia and Nigeria grow stronger with every generation.
May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
May God bless the Republic of Liberia.
And may God forever bless the enduring brotherhood between our two nations.
